How to take your organization up a notch in 2023: 3 Tips from an Interior Designer

Are you looking to take your organization up a notch in the new year? Here’s how!

As written in Psychology Today, clutter causes anxiety bombarding our minds with excessive stimuli (visual, olfactory, tactile), making our senses work overtime on stimuli that aren't necessary or important. Clutter constantly signals to our brains that our work is never done making it more difficult to relax, both physically and mentally.

Well, it’s 2023 and we are not going into the new year with this kind of negativity. I know I’ve touched on the importance of decluttering previously; I promise the benefits aren’t just for the sake of an aesthetically pleasing home. It’s more so for your own mental health, and aesthetics are a secondary benefit.

1. Enlist Help

I know as women, as moms, we tend to do everything ourselves, putting everything in a certain spot. However, when you are doing a whole home organization, it can be overwhelming for just one person to tackle. Get the whole family involved! Going through the closets, if your kiddos are old enough, they can try on clothes and make a fit and doesn’t fit pile. That’s an easy and fun project for them! Enlisting help, means you’re not the only one in the house that knows where something is. I promise, this WILL create less stress in the long run!

2. Start Small

If a space is too large, too overwhelming you might never start. By tackling a smaller project first, it can help get you in the right mindset to start that larger project. Starting small creates inertia, builds momentum, and leads to visible progress. In humans, instant gratification is a real thing, so by starting small, your mind immediately feels success and inherently you will keep going. Small tasks, small projects equal large accomplishments. In no time, your home will reap the rewards of starting small.

3. Take Pictures

Who doesn’t love a good before and after picture? TAKE THE PICTURES. Just like with weight loss, it serves as a motivation to keep going. Feeling proud, looking back at the old and appreciating the new, taking pictures is an excellent reminder of just what you did to get your home to where it’s currently at. It also helps if something gets put out of place, and you don’t remember where it used to be. Bam! Pictures are a visual index file.

Organizing your home, DOES NOT have to be a daunting task. Remember, enlist help, start small, take pictures, YOU GOT THIS! I hope that helped and stay tuned until next month!
